The Department of Pharmacology was first founded in 1975 as an integral part of the National Yang-Ming Medical College. Later on, Institute of Pharmacology, one of the basic sciences institutes in the School of Medicine, National Yang-Ming University, provided master program and Ph.D. program in 1985 and 1992, respectively. Since then, Department and Institute of Pharmacology work as one to embrace fully the dual goals/missions of incessant pursuit of academic excellence in both teaching and research. 

The institute of pharmacology aims to create an excellent academic environment and to nurture the leaders of next generation in new drug research, development and teaching. To understand the therapeutic action of drugs in human is our theme. Therefore, the Institute provides pharmacological courses regarding the mechanistic bases of drug actions, medical formulation, principles of drug prescription, pharmacological and toxicological profiles, drug interactions, new drug developments and regulatory measures. Furthermore, in collaboration with clinical instruction, the teaching and research of Institute spans the spectrum of pharmacology, neuroscience, toxicology, molecular biology, new drug development/discovery and bioinformatics. The research achievements cover both basic and clinical aspects, including therapeutic treatments for migraine, spinal cord injury, retinal diseases, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, kidney disease, cardiovascular diseases, tumor and carcinogen.
